Safety guidelines

All water users must comply with the Regulations contained in the Dockyard Port of Plymouth Order 2020 and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Rules of Road). Many incidents and near misses are a result of excessive speed or failing to keep a good lookout.

SPEED LIMITS

SPEED LIMITS

There are a variety of speed limits throughout the port to ensure the safety of all water users.

10 Knots              All vessels within 400 metres of the shore and north of Plymouth Breakwater

8 Knots                All vessels within the Cattewater

4 knots                All vessels within Sutton Channel and designated bathing or diving areas

Vessels under 15m in length overall may exceed the speed limit in Plymouth Sound (outside of 400m from the shore) and in the designated high speed areas.

SAFE SPEED

SAFE SPEED

Notwithstanding the speed limits all vessels should proceed at a speed appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions, traffic density and visibility.

On occasions this may be significantly below the prescribed speed limit.

GOOD LOOKOUT

GOOD LOOKOUT

Always keep a good lookout.  Be particularly vigilant for small craft and swimmers when close to the shore.

NARROW CHANNELS

NARROW CHANNELS

North of Plymouth Breakwater is designated a Narrow Channel and Rule 9 of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea applies.  All vessels less than 20m in length, sailing vessels and vessels engaged in fishing should not impede the safe passage of larger vessels.
