Milspo Business Network Awarded Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Award
Milspo CIC, supporting Military SPOs (spouses, partners and other-halves) around the world, awarded Defence Relationship Management’s prestigious Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Award. Milspo
CIC has been recognised by the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, being awarded this year’s prestigious Silver Award.
Milspo, founded in 2018, is a global network that supports UK military SPOs (spouses, partners and other-halves) to build successful and resilient businesses that endure the nomadic forces life. Members of the SPO community also include veterans, and reservists who are supported in building businesses that fit around their reservist responsibilities.
Milspo, was deemed by the Employer Recognition Schemeto be proactively supporting service personnel and the armed forces community, ensuring that their workforce is aware of their positive policies towards defence people and support to mobilisations.
To gain this Silver award Milspo was required to show tangible evidence of their proactive support of service personnel / armed forces community. They also actively demonstrated that their volunteer workforce is aware of their positive policies towards defence personnel and demonstrated support for reservist call outs or “mobilisations”.
During the 2020 pandemic, Milspo’s online meet-ups proved essential for UK SPOs, offering regular business and emotional support, keeping morale high, and, for those posted worldwide, giving them an essential link to 'home’. Through these digital solutions, in 2021 Milspo continues to provide hugely successful free virtual meet-ups, networking opportunities, workshops, expert training, annual events, and resources that are not limited by location, enabling Milspo members to share experiences and champion each other to achieve their dreams all of which can fit around childcare and deployments. Milspo Founder and Head of Operations Jess Sands, said:
“Having previously held the Bronze Employer Recognition Scheme Award, we are honoured to now have been awarded Silver. This achievement is particularly important for us as we are staffed entirely by volunteers; Military SPOs (spouse, partner or other-halves) as well as reservists and veterans.
“Milspo is unique in that we are 100% run by SPOs for SPOs, helping our members achieve their career ambitions with regards to owning a business which can thrive under the challenging conditions that living with a serving military person can often bring. Such challenges include that of having to move home every few years, whilst trying to keep a career and business going. To achieve Silver status is particularly special to us as we continue to thrive amongst such challenges.
“The award also comes at a time when the future looks bright for our community, as we have great plans for the upcoming year, including an exclusive Milspo Business Directory and more Virtual Networking opportunities for our 1000 plus membership.”
Milspo is an active member of the MOD’s Partner Employment Steering Group, advising on key policy decisions around military entrepreneurship and is mentioned in the Living In Our Shoes Review
commissioned by the MOD. Milspo also collaborated with Small Business Britain, Matt Hancock MP and the Big Support in May 2020 to showcase military community business to an extended audience, and has similar planned for 2021. Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Leo Docherty said:
“I would like to thank all the organisations who have proven their support for the Defence community during such unprecedented and challenging times.
“The vast range of those recognised this year demonstrates how employing the Armed Forces community makes a truly positive and beneficial impact for all employers, regardless of size, sector or location.”
The nominations were considered by a selection board at national level for Gold and regional level for Silver. This year’s London Employer Engagement Board went virtual, and through video conferencing technology each nomination was considered at length against the award criteria.
