LGBTQ+ Exhibition research - Your Support is Needed - Devonport Naval Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre is launching an exhibition in early 2020 to mark the 20th anniversary of the lifting of the ban on LGBTQ+ personnel serving in the armed forces. This special exhibition will focus on the experiences of serving RN/RM personnel both before and after the ban was lifted.
To support the exhibition, the museum is asking for contributions from current Service Personnel and Veterans. These contributions can be –
- Taking part in an informal conversation with the museum curator, talking about LGBTQ+ experiences that staff are happy to share. These conversations can focus on both good and bad LGBTQ+ experiences, and are intended to help tell the services LGBTQ+ story in the exhibition.
- Contributions of artefacts that help tell the LGBTQ+ story. These can be ordinary, relatable items that help illustrate the LGBTQ+ story. For example, pin badges or sunglasses worn by RN/RM staff on Pride marches, or a box of hormone pills kept from the transitioning process. These could also be more personal artefacts such as extracts from diaries that staff are happy to share.
If you are interested in taking part in an informal conversation, or have an artefact which you would like to contribute, please contact:
