The timeline is determined by the applicant initially. Once eligibility is confirmed, the applicant must travel to UK to complete all elements of selection. Once they have determined their choice of nearest AFCO to where they intend staying during selection, tyey can enter into dialogue with their AFCO via email and hopefully pre-arrange selection elements to condense their stay time in UK. Generall selection can take about 6-7 weeks, providing security clearance is gained.

Once selection is completed many overseas applicants fly home to await an entry date which can typically be 6-8 weeks later unless cancellations occur.

For Commonwealth citizens applying after 01 March 2017 (this year), there is a requirement of 5 years UK residency before they may apply.

The process is outlined here: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/forums/m22424.aspx

Hi all on the RN forum,

I have always had the want to join the British Military services.  I was brought to London in the 80's, I admired and hold all service men and women in high regard.  I was brought back to Ireland in 2000, I had a family and my aim of joining was put on hold temporally.  I'm 33 now and feel it is the time to commit to my life long dream.  I'm seeking guidance and information so I can attempt to serve for the greatest Military in the world.  Can I make it and am I eligible is the burning question that I can't ignore.
I would appreciate any info or links to achieve my goal.

    Kind regards

Hello, to join the Royal Navy, applicants must hold a British, Irish, Maltese or Cypriot passport.

Commonwealth passport holders must live in UK for five years before eligible to apply. Those who do not hold the above passports are ineligible to join unfortunately.

Applications to join the Royal Navy are accepted from applicants aged 15.75 years of age up until age 36. The RFA accepts applicants over UK state pension age.

To apply, follow the link here:https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/forums/m22424.aspx

Hi, if you have an email from us, it will detail the next stage of selection, if eligible.
At present there is a backlog of nearly 200 overseas applicants being processed, so once you reply to your email, please allow a couple of weeks for a response. We can only apologise for any delay from our end but hope you understand and thank you for your patience.

Once applications are underway, all correspondence will be via the sender of the email as we have no visibility of applications and cannot discuss individual issues on social media due to data protection legislation.

    Best of luck.

    Hello Cial,
Once your application has been completed and submitted, it will be passed electronically to your AFCO for process, usually within 48 hours. Your AFCO will then email you to invite you to sit the recruit test, usually within a further 72 hours . Check your junk/spam email folder as your AFCO is unlikely to be on, your 'known senders' list.

In the event you have heard nothing within a week of submitting your fully completed applicatrion, call us on 03456 07 55 55 to check progress.

You should be aware for Aircrewman, from recruit test to entry can take up to twelve months and selection for this branch is rigorous.

If you are an overseas applicant, all communications should be by email via the overseas desk at London AFCO.

The overseas desk at London AFCO are extremely busy at present, for which we can only apologise. It can take up to four weeks to get a response and if that period has elapsed, re-send your email.

Afternoon,My name is Colin Kimble.I am a dual citizen from South Africa. I begun my application process by registering my interest for the Royal Marines on the Royal Navy website. I phoned the recruitment centre from South Africa and I was told that it would be advised I should go to the UK to carry on the application process. I am able to fly there but I might have financial difficulty with regards to accommodation. Could the Royal Navy Welfare be able to please assist me? Is it also possible to maybe do the next steps of the application process through the British Embassy in South Africa?

    Sincerely
    Colin Kimble

    Hello Colin,
Travel to/from UK and accommodation during selection is unfortunately the responsibility of the applicant. All selection elements are conducted in UK and with sufficient prior notice and good communications it is sometimes possible for the processing AFCO to condense the selection process by pre-booking elements in advance of your arrival. This will limit stay time in UK enabling you to fly home whilst awaiting a start date.

The Royal Navy welfare organisation is geared towards those serving and their dependents and would be unlikely to financially support a potential joiner who may or may not successfully complete selection and training unfortunately.

    Hi there,

Am I able to check the progress of an application without calling the Royal Navy by telephone? I'm hoping to receive an email as soon as possible. Also, on average how long does the application process take? I'm very keen. :)
