Marines Commando: Stages and standards

Most people wouldn’t even contemplate putting their body under the strain that joining the Royal Marines requires. Now you’ve decided to become a Royal Marines Commando, you’re here because you want to make sure you make the grade.

You’ll faced with an exacting standards that you’ll need to meet and exceed if you’re to prove you can hack it as a Royal Marines Commando. Most of these tests have a minimum requirement, but it is a key part of the Royal Marines ethos to push to the limit, regardless of what is acceptable.


Basic Training

Marines Commando basic training is one of the longest and most arduous programmes in the world. You’ll need to be in the best condition of your life to make it through. Your Royal Navy career begins at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM) in Lympstone. You’ll spend 32 weeks here and learn the skills you need to become an elite soldier. Your one-way train ticket will be purchased for you at the start of training.

Complete an individual run, outdoors within a specific time. Enter your details below to see the minimum requirement to achieve a pass. As with the majority of Royal Navy fitness, you will be expected to return the best possible time.

What you'll be doing during training

You’ll push your body to the limit throughout Basic Training, completing a number of different physical exercises, and achieving specific results in order to progress. If you’re successful, you’ll have a base level of fitness that will benefit you as you start your career.
