Keep our most important asset ready for action

What is the Medical branch?

  • The Medical branch is medicine’s frontline. You’ll push yourself further, providing specialist care in NHS hospitals, on ships at sea, or in a field hospital
  • Wherever we go, we need the medical support that will keep us healthy. You could be the only Medic on a submarine, or a Biomedical Scientist on board a ship in the Gulf
  • There’s more to medicine in the Navy. From primary care in conflict zones, to specialising in radiation, you’ll experience things you wouldn’t as a civilian
  • We need medical professionals across all of our Services, which means you have the opportunity to work above and below the surface – and even earn as a Royal Marines Commando
  • Whether you join when you’re still training to be a nurse, or are already a GP, you’ll develop your skills in some unique and challenging environments

What's it like?

Life in the Medical branch is your opportunity to care for the people who protect our nation’s interests, being deployed to where you’re needed most, and taking on real responsibility from day one. You’ll be an essential part of your crew, whether you’re administering general medical care on the daily sick parade, or are providing a controlled laboratory environment in the field. The very nature of life in the Royal Navy means we need medical professionals of the highest calibre. That’s why you’ll receive constant training and have the opportunity to specialise in a variety of disciplines.

A day in the life: Medical

Siobhán, 23

Naval Nurse (Student)

Life in the Royal Navy is extraordinary, which is why I wanted to join in the first place. Doing vital work in some amazing places gives you a real buzz.

Where can I work?

Royal Navy ship at sea.

Aircraft carriers, assault ships, destroyers or frigates: this is our backbone. It gives us our global impact, from combat missions to humanitarian aid.

Royal Navy submarine at sea.

The world-renowned silent service, protecting us from beneath the waves. It’s responsible for highly classified, stealth operations – and Trident.

Royal Navy ship at sea.

From fuel to food: what we need, when we need it, wherever we are. This fleet of civilian ships provides global support to the whole Naval Service.
