        40 Commando

        40 Commando

        40 Commando is a battalion sized Unit providing part of 3 Commando Brigade’s amphibious warfare capability.

        40 Commando

        Based near Taunton, Somerset, 40 Commando has been deployed in Afghanistan since September 2012, with some 650 personnel committed to the Nahr-e Sarah district of Helmand.

        Previous deployments have been to the Sangin region of Helmand Province, as well as tasking with the amphibious Cougar deployments to the Mediterranean – showing that the commando is an elite and flexible unit able to deploy anywhere in the world.

        Military experience

        Alex Janzen joined the Royal Marines in 1995, serving as a Troop Commander in Comacchio Group. Following a period as a Company Second in Command he completed the Regimental Signals Officers Course and was appointed RSO to 42 Commando in 1998 and deployed to Northern Ireland. Subsequent deployments to the USA followed, and an amphibious deployment to the Mediterranean culminating in Operation Palliser in Sierra Leone. A further operational deployment to Sierra Leone followed with Operation Silkman.

        He served as a Recruit Troop Commander and was later appointed as an SO3 on the Staff of HQ 3 Commando Brigade for Operation TELIC 1 in Iraq. Following command of Communications Squadron of the UK Landing Force Command Support Group, he promoted to Major in 2004 and attended the Initial Command and Staff Course (Land).

        Appointed as Operations Officer of 42 Commando he deployed to Norway and on Operation HERRICK 5 in Afghanistan. Following sub-unit command and a period as SO2 Plans in 3 Commando Brigade with amphibious deployments to the Far East, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2009. He attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course and was appointed Chief of Staff of Headquarters 3 Commando Brigade and completed Operation HERRICK 14 in Afghanistan prior to serving as a Military Strategic Planner in the Ministry of Defence.

        Lieutenant Colonel Janzen assumed command of 40 Commando Royal Marines in August 2013. He is married with two children. His hobbies include kayaking, fly-fishing and Telemark skiing.
