        Military experience

        Educated at Southampton University, Jerry Kyd joined the Royal Navy as a Seaman Officer in 1985 and spent his early career at sea in various ships, including aircraft carriers, frigates and the Fishery Protection Squadron.

        In the 1990s, he qualified as a Gunnery Officer and Specialist Navigator, and saw active service in operations in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and the Gulf.

        In the last decade, in addition to instructional duties at the Maritime Warfare School as the Specialist Navigator Course ‘teacher’, he served as the Navigating Officer of HMS Ark Royal and commanded the Type 23 frigate HMS Monmouth.

        Leaving the sea temporarily, he spent four busy years in the Ministry of Defence, where he was responsible initially for the Global Combat Ship project in the Department of Equipment Capability before selection to serve as the Military Assistant and Deputy Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff.

        After attending the Higher Command and Staff Course, he commanded the strike carrier HMS Ark Royal before moving across to HMS Illustrious as she worked up from her refit in the commando carrier role.

        Leaving ‘Lusty’ in early 2012, he returned to the Ministry of Defence as the Assistant Head of the Directorate of Operational Capability before taking Command of Britannia Royal Naval College in September 2012.

        Captain Jerry Kyd is married and has four sons; his other interests include keeping fit, shooting, improving his alpine skiing and, as a Yachtmaster (Offshore), sailing in home waters.
