Unit History

Strong Links with Birmingham1986

The RNR has always had strong links with Birmingham. A Naval Communications Training Centre was established in the city by the end of World War II. In 1986, it was commissioned as HMS Forward.

Present Location1999

The unit moved to its present location in April 1999 when it was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal.

Freedom of the City2004

The long association between the Royal Naval Reserve and the City of Birmingham was formally recognised in 2004 when HMS Forward received the Freedom of the City.
