HMS MIDDLETON WEBSITE
Welcome onboard HMS Middleton, the second ship to carry the name and the seventh in the Hunt class of mine counter measures vessels. We hope you enjoy your visit and learn something about the ship and its crew as well as her duties.
HMS Middleton was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd, Glasgow and launched on 4 July 1984 by Lady Blaker. She has a close affiliation with the town of Middleton in the Borough of Rochdale.
MIDDLETON was one of the first Royal Navy ships to be fitted with the latest mine hunting sonar, command system and mine disposal system. This state of the art equipment ensures that the Royal Navy remains a world leader in mine countermeasures, helping to safeguard the maritime trade routes which carry 98% of our imports and exports.
Since early 2008 two Hunt class ships have been permanently stationed in the Gulf. In order to support their operations the 2nd Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCM2) adopted a crew rotation system, swapping crews in turn between the ships in the Gulf and the remainder in the UK. MCM2 Crew 7 returned to the Gulf in July 2010 to become the Ship’s Company of HMS Middleton, having been in the Gulf in 2009 as the crew of HMS Chiddingfold.
