Welcome to the website of HMS Atherstone – M38.  Built by Vosper Thorncroft and launched by Mrs Amy Jarvis, wife of the then Deputy Controller of the Royal Navy, on 1st March 1986.  Atherstone, along with the rest of her class, are the most expensive vessels (per cubic metre) in the Royal Navy and the largest warships in the world to be made of glass-reinforced plastic.

The expense is due to the advanced sonar and mine-hunting equipment and her elaborate construction all geared toward making her able to operate in mine-rich environments as safely as possible.

Our operations are primarily geared towards deterring illicit activities at sea and working closely with regional partners and allies to ensure the continued safety of lawful maritime practices and extend security and prosperity to the regions in which we operate.
