How Do I Join?

We hope that after reading all about HMS President you’ll want to join us.

Come to one of our Recruiting Acquaint Evenings and hear first hand what we actually do.  If you are fairly fit, enthusiastic, committed and motivated we think you would enjoy life as a Royal Navy Reservist.  You will also need to attend your local Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO – and phone numbers should be in your local directory), and complete a medical test, eye test, fitness test, get a security clearance, do a written assessment and have an interview.

Once you join us you will begin what is known as Initial training, and also do some fitness training, either with the Unit or in your own time.  You will also be given a uniform.  We will help you to develop yourself physically, to grow in confidence and to learn new skills that may transfer to your workplace.  Training is challenging, depends on a great deal of team work and prepares you for your two week Initial Training Course at HMS Raleigh.

As well as all the training, you can take part in a wide variety of sports, including Adventure Training, social events, formal occasions including Parades, and recruiting initiatives.  On top of all this we’ll pay you too.  We normally reimburse you for your traveling expenses to and from your RNR Unit. At the end of the year, providing you have completed all the training required, you will also receive a Tax Free Bounty.

We won't ask anything of you that you have not been trained to do. It's demanding but that is because it's meant to be, so ask yourself whether you are you determined enough to undergo training and maintain your regular job, school or college course?  And if you have children, you will need to organise childcare.

To join you must:

1. Be 16-40 (45 with suitable previous military experience)
2. Have a good level of basic fitness
3. Be able to commit to training on one or two evenings per week, some weekends and two weeks per year.

Call us 24hrs a day on 08456 07 55 55 and find out if you have what it takes to be a Royal Navy Reservist.

Our presentation nights begin at 1900 and follow a specific programme, during which we will provide a 1hr presentation, a tour of the Unit and finish with a few drinks in the Junior Rates' Mess.  This will give you the opportunity to talk to serving members of HMS President in an informal setting.
