Temeraire pool Situated in Burnaby Road, Portsmouth, HMS Temeraire houses the Fleet Recreation Centre and is also home to the RN School of Physical Training and the Directorate of Naval Physical Training and Sport (DNPTS).

The Fleet Recreation Centre provides sports facilities for Service personnel serving in the Portsmouth area. These include a swimming pool, fitness suite and weights area, squash courts and a gymnasium for activities such as indoor soccer, badminton, volleyball, netball and cricket.

Located within the same building, the primary purpose of the RN School of Physical Training is to select and train serving RN personnel as Physical Trainers. There is no direct entry route into the PT Branch and volunteers must pass a demanding Aptitude Test to determine their suitability before being selected for training at HMS Temeraire. The School runs a variety of career courses throughout the year, including the 25-week long Physical Trainers Qualifying Course, where serving Naval ratings qualify to transfer to the PT branch.

Staff of the Directorate Naval Physical Training and Sport are responsible for directing and implementing policy in areas such as Fitness Testing. Adventurous and Sport. DNPTS also provides funding, facilities, advice and support in order that Naval sport and adventurous training can flourish at all levels from 'grass roots' to international standard. On the more practical side, RN Sports Officers within the Directorate provide support for RN representative teams, including organising fixtures, sponsoring coaching and officiating courses, and assisting with the organisation of tours.

The Captain of HMS Temeraire, is also the Director of Naval Physical Training and Sport and as such is responsible for meeting the requirements of 2 Mission statements:

DNPTS Mission Statement

To direct the policy on Royal Navy Physical Training, Fitness Testing, Adventurous Training and Sport, and to direct the Physical Training in support of the generation of ship and fighting spirit.

Captain HMS Temeraire Mission Statement

To select and train physical trainers at the RN School of Physical Training; and to provide gymnasia, fitness suite, swimming pool and squash courts for the Naval Service, Civil Servants and dependants.
