February saw the first Warfare Classes 05/06 and 06/06 joining at HMS Collingwood for induction into the new Public Services Apprenticeship framework, borne out of the formation of the new branch structures as part of the Naval Board Personal Change Programme.

The Apprenticeship Framework chosen was the Public Services NVQ Award (Level 2). This national award, tailored by the Royal Marines and awarded through City and Guilds, clearly recognises the progressive skill sets and knowledge gained by individuals joining the services against that of their peers in civilian life. The award is a mixture of work based training and education, developed for new entrants, based upon their branches and designed to be accomplished as they complete Phase 1 and Phase 2 training.

By achieving this award, students will have demonstrated competence in a variety of skills and knowledge covering 7 NVQ unit disciplines, plus Key Skills (life skills, numeracy, literacy, ICT etc) and be fully educated on their employment responsibilities and rights. These ratings will gain greater self esteem in their success, have recognised skills transferable in varied practical environments and above all it will enable them to become confident and competent members of the Royal Navy.

The branches currently involved with the Public Service Apprenticeship Programme are:
Warfare AB (WS), Diver AB (Diver), Hydrographer and Meteorological AB (HM), Mine Warfare AB (MW), Sonar Submariners (SSM), Tactical Submariners (TSM) and Seaman Specialists AB (Sea).
