What is HM Naval Base Clyde?
Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde at Faslane and Coulport is home to the United Kingdom’s Nuclear Deterrent. As the largest military establishment in Scotland, HM Naval Base Clyde provides a base port to the ships and submarines of the Faslane Flotilla (FASFLOT), and supports dozens of other visiting vessels each year.
The Faslane Flotilla comprises:
Four nuclear powered Vanguard Class SSBN submarines which between them maintain a continuous at sea presence of the UK's Independent Strategic Nuclear Deterrent. Vanguard Class SSBN
Two nuclear powered Swiftsure Class SSN attack submarines which are armed with conventional weapons. Swiftsure Class SSN
Eight Sandown Class Specialist Mine Countermeasure Vessels.
Seven nuclear powered Trafalgar Class SSN attack submarines which will shortly be based at HM Naval Base Clyde following the Maritime Change Announcement.
Three nuclear powered Astute Class attack submarines, the largest and most powerful attack submarines ever built for the Royal Navy, are being built by BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness. Once commissioned the vessels homeport will be HM Naval Base Clyde. See Future Submarines
HM Naval Base Clyde can be thought of as a garage for all these vessels – keeping them ready to go to sea – and the hotel for the ship’s crews. Indeed, with over 1,700 beds, the Base is one of the largest hotels in Scotland!
The Base is the largest single site employer in Scotland with an integrated workforce of around 6,500 personnel – drawn from the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence civilians, Babcock Marine (the MOD's industrial partner at the Base) and external contractors. A further 3,000 Scottish jobs are supported indirectly by HM Naval Base Clyde and more than £250 million is spent in Scotland on wages and contracts awarded each year, directly related to the Base.
