Navy helicopters delivering aid to the Philippines

Royal Naval Helicopters from HMS Illustrious have begun to deliver aid, people and equipment to small Philippine islands devastated by Typhoon Haiyan over a fortnight ago. Using her Sea King and Merlin helicopters the Portsmouth based Helicopter Commando carrier sent engineering teams of around 50 people to Bitoon in the south of Calagnaan to repair damage to a school, clear routes of fallen trees and help repair battered fishing boats.

HMS Illustrious departs Singapore for the Philippines

HMS Illustrious has today departed Singapore en route to the Philippines. During 48 hours alongside Sembawang naval shipyard in Singapore, over 500 tons of disaster relief aid was loaded into the hangar by the men and women serving in HMS Illustrious, a team from the Department for International Development (DFID), and the embarked forces including J Company 42 Commando Royal Marines and the carrier air group.

Ahead of HMS Daring sailing in and RAF C17 transporters flying out, a specialist team from the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters arrived to co-ordinate Britain’s military relief effort, ensuring the right aid goes to the right place.
