Royal Navy NEMOs run for charity

Two teams of Royal Navy New Entry Medical Officers (NEMOs) have been doing their bit for charity and as well as passing on their skills to the people of Portsmouth.

Seventeen NEMOs based at the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) in Gosport, dedicated a whole day to raising funds for the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and make people aware of basic life saving methods.

Not to make it too easy for themselves, they came up with the idea of running from the Royal Marines Museum at Eastney to the Naval Dockyard – a distance of 6.3 kilometres, then across the Gosport Ferry and onto their base at INM – a further 9.8 kilometres.

And if that wasn’t enough they decided to do it with an Army Pattern Stretcher and a 40kg Man Overboard Mannequin!

Whilst one team ran the first leg from Eastney the second team set up an interactive activity inside the Historic Dockyard for members of the public, where they taught basic life support techniques in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK guidance.

“We felt it important to utilise our skills and teach members of the public during our charity event in addition to raising funds,” said Surgeon Lieutenant Andora Holden.

“Many people have not been taught basic life support, which could prove to be lifesaving in an emergency. We aimed to get the message out there and teach, hopefully over 100 people some lifesaving techniques.”

After a brief stopover in the Dockyard and a chance to catch their breath, the teams changed over and the second team continued via the Gosport Ferry onwards to the institute of Naval Medicine and the finish.
