Royal Navy sailors at HM Naval Base Clyde recently welcomed the reopening of the Junior Rates bar after the facility underwent an extensive refurbishment.
On February 20, the reopening was marked by the first Junior Rates function of 2017 and Captain Craig Mearns, Captain of HMS Neptune, was on hand to declare the area open.
"This reopening represents many weeks of hard work and effort by a number of people," said Captain Mearns.
"It is another stepping stone in the gradual improvement of facilities across HM Naval Base Clyde for the benefit of our people. Particular thanks are due to the Junior Rates Committee, the Base Warrant Officer, WO1 Wayne Burbury, and Babcock Maritime, our Industrial Partner."
The facility has been fitted with new wooden flooring, all new furniture and has also been completely redecorated.
Support for the renovation was provided by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), the Rebalancing Lives Fund, the Junior Rates Committee, and industry partner Babcock.
The reopening comes just weeks after the completion of a major refurbishment of the Naval Base's sports area. On January 31 Captain Mearns cut the ribbon on the Sportsdrome's new Main Gym Area, climbing wall and swimming pool.
Last year there was significant investment in a new state-of-the-art Cardio Vascular suite and weights room, named after former Physical Training Instructor Doug Wylie.
Scotland's HM Naval Base Clyde will be the single operational home of the UK Submarine Service from 2020. Significant investment is underway to improve and upgrade the site, to ensure that it remains fit for purpose well into the 21st Century.
Investment will see upgrades made across the Base's waterfront, engineering support, living accommodation and physical security, including being ready for the Successor class of deterrent submarines which will arrive from the early 2030s.
