The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the world’s leading gardening charity, is teaming up with WRNS100 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the Women’s Royal Naval Service.
For the first time in more than a decade, the RHS is embarking on a new show with a style and content unlike any of its existing events.
RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will run from June 7-11 and will be set within the 404-hectare (1,000-acre) parkland of the Chatsworth Estate, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.
Adding to the show portfolio of the RHS – which already includes shows at Chelsea, Cardiff, Malvern, Hampton Court, and Tatton Park in Cheshire – the Chatsworth event will seek to expand on current offerings and surprise and delight visitors with “an immersive horticultural event experience”.
To celebrate WRNS100, the RHS is inviting all former Wrens and women serving in today’s Royal Navy to craft a Wren bird or The Wren Rose – Rosa The Wren (‘Kormamtiza’) – that will be used to create a display at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show.
The Wren or Wren Rose should be a minimum size of 1” x 1” and a maximum size of 12” x 12”.
It can be made out of any material but should be waterproof, as the installation will be outside for up to six days, and sturdy enough to be sent by post.
Exhibits should be as colourful as possible to create real impact at the event, and individuals can submit more than one craft contribution.
Exhibits will need to be received by the RHS between April 6 and 20.
Details on how and where to submit the exhibits will be announced by RHS this month on the WRNS100, AoW and Wrens informal Facebook pages.
Exhibits used to create the final installation will be selected by the artist. There is no guarantee that the installation will include all submitted exhibits.
Unfortunately, exhibits not selected for use cannot be returned to the contributor.
At the end of the show, all exhibits will be put up for sale to members of the public, to raise funds for the WRNS Benevolent Trust.
