HMS Collingwood kids attend Kings Camp

HMS Collingwood has once again opened its doors for a week of sporting activities organised by Kings Camp.

This year’s sessions saw 80 children, aged 5 to 14 years old; attend the camp which was hosted at the Fareham naval establishment.

The Kings Camp personnel supporting the week included six coaches, a swimming coach, activities manager and site manager.

Each day began with the site manager, Tom King, conducting a ‘warm up’ with the children, before they were moved into smaller groups for various activities.

Tom, from Leeds, is a drama and English teacher and he got involved with Kings Camp following a suggestion from a friend who was also involved with the organisation.

He said “My role really is to ensure the kids, parents and coaches are happy. I liaise with the base and am the first point of contact for all safety issues.

“I got involved with Kings Camp because I love working with children and it’s a great thing to do during the summer.”

Coach Shanice Field, 21, is currently at University studying to be a PE teacher for primary school children and is also a lifeguard. She said of her involvement with Kings Camp “I want to be a PE teacher so for me this is great practice.”

Kings Camp is a leading provider of holiday sports and activity day camps for children, working closely with many naval communities across the UK.

Activities include a wide range of sports, socialising, interacting and learning new skills from their experiences. With full use of sports facilities including swimming pool, indoor and outdoor facilities, the inspiring Kings Camps coaches ensure all children are fully involved in the activities.

HMS Collingwood is just one of the destinations for Kings Camp this year; groups have also been run at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth.

The Camps are made possible for Service dependants because of the financial support given by the RNRMC which has supported the camps since its inauguration in HMS Temeraire 6 years ago.
