Chris Eubank & Glenn McCrory guests of honour at RNAS Culdrose Boxing Championships

Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose recently welcomed former world champion boxers Chris Eubank Senior and Glenn McCrory to support the ‘Royal Navy Royal Marine Inter-regional Boxing Championships 2017’.

The aim of the event was to offer personnel the chance to develop their boxing skills and the opportunity to compete as part of the Royal Navy’s boxing development programme.  If selected, boxers then have the opportunity to progress and represent their region in the future.

Naturally, physical fitness in the Fleet Air Arm is essential so that personnel can carry out their roles effectively. The event, which was organised by Leading Physical Trainer Dean Goulding, was designed to further encourage sport and fitness, and enable RNAS Culdrose aviators to be the very best in their day job.

LPT Goulding said of the event: “Boxing optimises so many of our core values here at RNAS Culdrose - from grit and determination, to courage and being stealth.

"By keeping fit and encouraging participation in sport, our personnel can complete their roles effectively and to the best of their ability.”

The competition took place over the course of a week, with 36 boxers competing to take part in the final under the watchful eyes of a large crowd, and of course the two guests of honour.

The participants said it was “an honour and a privilege” to box in front of two champions, and that they had “helped to inspire attendees on the day”.

As well as cheering from the side lines, Chris Eubank addressed the crowd and expressed his admiration for the Royal Navy and the dedication of its people.
