The men and women of the HMS Queen Elizabeth Golf Society have presented a cheque to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNCRMC) following two successful fundraising events.
The excellent sum of £8500 was presented to Mr Robert Robson, Chief Executive of the RNRMC, by Lieutenant Chris Flynn, Captain of the Ship’s Golf Society, and Petty Officer Craig “Cheesy” Hilton following their second successive annual Charity Golf Open.
The events, each attended by over seventy players and supporters from both service and civilian backgrounds, were held at Dalmahoy Golf Club near Rosyth where the both HMS Queen Elizabeth, and her sister ship HMS Prince of Wales, are being built.
Lt Chris Flynn, said: “Special thanks must go the society’s committee members and to our generous sponsors who helped us to raise a fantastic sum of money and also to the RNRMC for their excellent support of the society.
“Both events were hugely successful and enjoyable for all who took part.
“Thanks to the success of our fundraising efforts, we were also able to donate a considerable sum of money in support of the HMS Queen Elizabeth Welfare Fund which will directly benefit the men and women who serve on-board the carrier in the future.
“I’d also like to thank Lt Cdr Tom Hetherington who was club captain last year and organised the first charity open so successfully.”, he added.
Event sponsors Blackrock, Xpedite Group of Companies and SignPlus were all acknowledged for their contributions.
Captain Jerry Kyd, Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth said: “The hard work and support that the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity provide benefits all in the Naval Service and we should all be hugely grateful for it.
“I’m particularly proud that my ship has been able to support the charity with this fantastic sum of money and it is a credit to all in the Golf Society and the effort they put in to organise two very successful charity events.”
HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first of a class of two to be completed, is due set sail for the first time in spring 2017 when she will move to her permanent home in Portsmouth Naval Base.
The huge aircraft carriers, stretching to over 4 acres of open deck space and incorporating over 3,000 separate compartments, can cover upwards of 500 nautical miles, or 900 kilometres, per day.
