Sultan’s trim trail brings fresh fitness challenge

Sports and recreation facilities at HMS Sultan were given a welcome boost recently with the formal opening of a new Trim Trail.

Offering a course made up of 14 different obstacles, the Trim Trail will provide both teams and individuals with a unique challenge designed to get the whole body moving.

Captain Peter Towell, the Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan and Hilary Jukes from The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) were given the task of formally opening the facility before the first group of enthusiastic trainees were given an opportunity to test out the course.

The purchase of the Trim Trail was made possible thanks to the combined generosity of RNRMC, Royal Navy and Royal Marines Sports Lottery (RNSL), the Royal Navy’s Rebalancing Lives Fund and a Local initiative Grant (LiG).

Chief Petty Officer Physical Training Lee Derbyshire said: “The Trim Trail is a low level assault course that you can challenge individuals and teams of 6 to run around. Obstacles range from the monkey bars through to a wooden escalator and the aim really is to get around the course as quick as you can.”

“We will be looking at trying to set individual and team challenges for the fastest time around the course every term.”

The new Trim Trail replaces the original course from 2010 which was closed due to wear and tear with a brand new course, which comes complete with a manufacturer’s 10 year guarantee.

Hilary Jukes from the RNRMC said: “We are really pleased to be able to put some money towards the new Trim Trail so that it can be used again.”

“It’s a really fun and varied way for people to be able to keep fit and we hope that all of those serving within Sultan will be able to take advantage of the new equipment.”
