HMS Westminster’s swimmers make waves

The world’s surface is 71% water, but HMS Westminster’s swimmers needed only one lane to take victory along with their colleagues from HMNB Portsmouth.

Three members of HMS Westminster took part in the Eastern Regional Swimming Championship, held at HMS Collingwood on Wednesday 2nd November. Other teams included HMS Collingwood and HMS Diamond.

Even though not all of HMS Westminster’s swimming team were able to attend, between them they brought home 6 medals, of which over half were gold! LET Matt Duggard took an impressive three gold medals including, in the hardest event of all, the Individual Medley.

Obviously, without the support of their colleagues from across the Naval Base the overall victory would not have been possible. HMNB Portsmouth entered every single event and took a medal in each!

The Westminster spirit, as always at sporting events, was clear to see. AB Crawle, who has not swam competitively for over 5 years, joined the team at the very last moment and was a valuable asset to the team from HMNB Portsmouth.

“It’s great to see how the Westminster Standard shone through. The swimmers from HMS Westminster have not only talent, but team spirit, making them true sportsmen.” Said SLt Kilby.

The team are now looking forward to competing in the Navy Championships at the end of this month.
