The figurehead of Admiral Sir John Jervis that takes pride of place and welcomes you as you enter HMS Collingwood, has received a much-needed make over.
The incentive to spruce up this imposing construction began earlier this year, when, during routine establishment rounds it became apparent that it was looking rather tired and in need of serious repair.
Noting that this had the potential to be an interesting project to be involved with, Petty Officer Stuart Linehan, an instructor in the Underwater Training Section at the Fareham base, stepped forward with only one caveat, it needed to be completed by 4 June 2016, the establishment’s Open Day.
Stuart began by emailing the Head of Historic ships, Mr Andrew Baines in the hope that he could steer him in the right direction.
He replied within the hour offering advice on how to approach the project and providing him with the details for Mr Andy Peters of ‘Maritimawoodcarving’ Company based in Oxford and after meeting, Andy provided a work package and estimate, and agreed possible start dates.
From start to finish the Figurehead took 7 working days to complete.
Talking of the experience Stuart said “I have thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of this project and I consider it a privilege to have been able to plan and oversee the restoration of such an important Naval Figure.
Mr Andy Peters has restored the Figurehead to an exceptional standard, returning the colours to original and historical specifications.
“I feel like I have become part of the history of the Figurehead and hope that should, in the future, further repair be needed that the right care and consideration be applied to ensure the longevity of our Naval History and one of the Nations’ greatest Naval Heroes.”

Admiral Sir John Jervis commanded the British fleet at St Vincent from aboard his flagship, HMS Victory.
Following the victory at St Vincent he was created Baron Jervis of Meaford in the County of Staffordshire and Earl St Vincent.
