Charity funds cooked up by Devonport

A charity cake sale in Plymouth’s Devonport Naval Base has raised £800.

The bakes were made by naval base contractor ESS employees Lauren Marlow and Jo Day and event organiser Royal Naval Leading Rating Hannah Nelder and Jacqueline Clink at the HQ of the Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) organisation.

Hannah, who has organised similar events when serving in warships, said: “I decided to organise this as I have found it is a great way to bring personnel together to raise morale and socialise in a more informal environment. 

“It also has the added bonus of raising money for good causes.’’

Charities benefiting will be Jeremiah’s Journey, a Plymouth-based charity providing support to bereaved or soon to be bereaved children and teenagers (http://jeremiahsjourney.org.uk/),  and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

Hannah added: “Although I have no personnel connection with the charities, I like the challenge of organising events such as this and I am always an advocate of charities that have a connection with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

“Jeramiah’s Journey and the RNRMC both fulfil this criteria.”

Hannah also thanked Lauren and Jo and Wendy Cracroft for helping make the event a success.

Rear Admiral John Clink, who heads FOST, said:  “At the end of a busy year this is a fantastic opportunity for FOST staff to relax and take stock of what they have achieved in training not just our own navy but our international partners.

“At the same time we whole heartedly support both Jeremiah’s Journey and the RNRMC who can make the world of difference to our sailors and the local community during difficult times.”
