We are pleased to announce that pleasure flights are now pre bookable for Air Day 2016 providing the opportunity to see the Airfield and the stunning Cornish coast from the air.

Enjoy spectacular views of RNAS Culdrose and Cornwall during Air Day 2016.  There is nothing quite like the sensation of hovering in a powerful, fast-moving helicopter – looking down at the ground just a few feet below.

But there is no time to ponder, as your pilot has applied power and you can feel the helicopter accelerating over the ground and now you are climbing, flying away to 1000 feet.

Whilst you admire the breath-taking countryside, your pilot will point out the local landmarks.

Gradually the helicopter returns gently to earth.

A Busy and demanding year

Whilst our Front Line are deployed on ships around the world, back at the Air Station, trainee Aircrew, Engineers, Air Traffic Controllers, Fire-fighters and Flight Deck crews undergo intensive training prior to joining Naval Air Squadrons for duties at sea.

About 3000 people are based at Culdrose – those who fly and many more who help them to get airborne.

These include:

  • Teams of engineers who maintain our aircraft and keep them in the air.
  • Air Traffic Controllers who manage 45,000 aircraft movements a year.
  • The Logistics Department providing vast numbers of stores items to support all squadrons and units.
  • A Bird Control Unit to keep the airfield clear of birds and limit the threat of bird strikes.
  • Meteorologists who predict and monitor the weather to aid flight safety.
  • A Medical Centre to look after the well-being of military personnel.
  • Fire crews who provide emergency support.
  • Physical Trainers and a sports centre to keep us fit.
  • The chaplaincy team to administer to the spiritual and emotional needs of our people.
  • Security, police, catering and other behind-the-scenes support services.

Our World

One of Europe’s largest helicopter bases, our primary objective is to deliver trained and capable Naval Air Squadrons specialising in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare and Airborne Surveillance and Control to undertake operations anywhere in the world.

Danger can lurk above, on or below the ocean; therefore our aircraft are vital to the Royal Navy, enabling enemy aircraft, ships and submarines to be spotted from long distances.

Hold on tight – Air Day will give you a sensory explosion!

This is your opportunity to see what RNAS Culdrose and the Royal Navy has to offer close up.  Walk around the displays showcasing the varieties of aircraft in use within the Navy.

Meet the men and women involved in the daily operation and maintenance of our aircraft. We have fast jets, helicopters, training aircraft, historic aircraft and much more on display… even some foreign visitors.
