Eligibility and Recruitment Process

As a Petty Officer Marine Engineering Technician, you’ll be providing expertise and leadership at the head of a team of Royal Navy engineers. You’ll serve on board a ship in active duty and on shore. In both scenarios you’ll experience all the excitement, camaraderie and variety of life in the Royal Navy.

The role is open to men and women under 40 years old. You must be a UK National, Commonwealth Citizen or British Dual National. The basic qualifying criteria are:

  • Formal academic engineering qualification at Level 4 (HNC or equivalent)
  • Level 2 qualification in Maths and English (GCSE grade C or better)
  • 3 years experience of maintaining and fault diagnosis of electrical and/or mechanical systems. (propulsion systems, controls, diesel engines, water plant, power generation, refrigeration, as examples of some relevant systems)
  • Supervisory experience and line management over at least 2 engineering technicians.

You’ll also need to meet the Royal Navy’s normal standards of physical and medical fitness and demonstrate acceptable technical competence in discussion at interview.

Once we’ve checked your application you’ll be invited to attend the AFCO for basic security and identity checks as well as a psychometric test of English, Maths and Mechanical Comprehension (a practice test booklet will be provided prior to this).

The next step is a recruitment interview, again at the AFCO to ensure you’re suitable for Royal Navy life and fully understand the terms and conditions. This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions and really get under the skin of what the role entails. The final stage of assessment will take place at a selection centre in Portsmouth where medical and physical tests as well as technical competence will be checked.

If successful you’ll be offered an initial probationary engagement of six months with a 14 day notice period. This will be followed by an initial contract of 11 years, with the option to submit 12 months notice to leave after 18 months.

You’ll be given a date to join during April 2016, with a second entry in the Autumn of 2016.
