Exercise Joint Warrior

Exercise Joint Warrior is a training event into which the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), NATO and partner nations’ formations, units and their Staffs can participate and undertake Collective Training. The aim is to provide a complex environment in which the participants can train together, honing tactics and skills in preparation for a deployment as a Combined Joint Task Force and to ensure maximum preparedness in the face of any future threat.

Joint Warrior is a UK-led multinational exercise that takes place in spring and autumn each year over a two-week period, historically off the coast of North West Scotland but increasingly agile in location to conduct readiness training where benefit is greatest. The Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and British Army are joined by forces from NATO, JEF, and partner nations. The exercise doesn’t only allow participating units to practice operating in sub-threshold and conflict levels of warfare – it also helps encourages broader engagement and greater interoperability.

The scenario for each Joint Warrior is designed to reflect contemporary political tensions and to simulate potential crisis that might result from them. It includes airborne assaults, amphibious operations, ‘grey zone’ threats, and live-fire exercises.

Joint Warrior 23-1

This spring’s Joint Warrior Exercise has been designed as the maritime domain’s contribution to Joint Viking 23, a large-scale Land focussed training event orchestrated by the Norwegian Armed Forces in the High North. Although two sovereign exercises and planning staffs have come together, Joint Viking and Joint Warrior are being delivered as one combined activity by the Norwegian Joint Headquarters (NJHQ) and UK Joint Training & Exercise Planning Staff (JTEPS). This converged exercise initiative should elevate the readiness training of NATO and JEF forces in some of the most challenging environmental conditions possible, as well as supporting NATO deterrence messaging. There are more than 20,000 personnel taking part from 10 nations - the UK, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Poland and the USA with more than 30 ships, 2 submarines and multiple aircraft ranging from maritime patrol and fifth generation fighters to troop transporter.
