21 Oct 09 - What a Day for the Royal Navy !

29 people rate this

What a week for the Web Team !  Firstly an apology to everyone that was on line on Wed 21 Oct when the web site ground to a halt.  We knew it was going to be a heavy day on the website with all the events going on around the country - but we had underestimated just how heavy it was going to be!

Just in case you missed it - HMS ILLUSTRIOUS arrived in Liverpool for a 5 day high profile visit to celebrate Fly Navy 100; DEFENDER - the 5th of the T45 Destroyers - was launched in Barrow; it was Trafalgar Day so there was a service in St Pauls Cathedral and various dinners and parades took place throughout the country; and Princess Ann was visiting both HMS SULTAN and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard ! Phew !  All the events were a complete and resounding success - and to find out more take a peek at the stories published on the new pages (RN Live).

Introducing the Royal Navy Internet Team - Warship Interactive

75 people rate this

Welcome to our first blog as the RN Web Team.  Our plan is for each of the team to take it in turn to update this blog, focussing on a different feature each week.

The RN web site has in excess of 4200 pages and covers a wide range of subjects including news from the front line, diaries and blogs, fact files and history, and recruiting to name but a few.    Each blog will focus on a  different part of the website and give you an insight into what we are working on and what you can expect to see on the site in the future.

T45 Back at Sea and Proving Her Warfighting Credentials

108 people rate this

After a week alongside spent catching up with maintenance as well as some defect rectification we are back at sea.  The week in Portsmouth allowed us to settle into our new base port, to face-to-face with the support agencies that answer our requests for help and, even, for some, some leave. We sailed in good shape with all machinery in proper working order.  We proved it of course, by sprinting across to Portland, testing everything to its full extent …..not quite the gently running in period that we might do with our cars.  We do indeed stop in 5 ship lengths from full ahead to full astern!

T45 Meets the Royal Marines

The Entry to Portsmouth was a quite awe-inspiring experience for the Ship.  Despite the fog, there were hundreds of people lining the front as we slipped into Harbour.  I had never experienced such a welcome before and it was a really powerful and delightful illustration of the interest and support that people have for the Royal Navy.  Having said all that, I think we are right to be excited (I would say that wouldn’t I) – the most capable Air Defence Destroyer in the World – Defence, the RN and British Industry deserve to be animated bout the achievement.

Portsmouth Bound

77 people rate this

We are now cutting across the English Channel after a 2-hour stop off DARING’s affiliated Island of Guernsey.   With press onboard, the weeks of planning for our first entry are starting to become reality.  Once again, there have been some challenges, not least the weather.  The Irish Sea was at its worst on Saturday night and many of the Ship’s Company were introduced to the dubious pleasure of sea-sickness.  All well by Sunday lunchtime, when we took a couple of hours off to do a Concept 2 rowing competition.  Two machines were set up on the Flight Deck and while the engineers did some full power trials and the Ship threw up a huge wake, a few brave souls rowed their hearts out.  We have also completed a series of aviation related exercises, in preparation for the arrival of a MERLIN helicopter while at anchor on Monday.

Dickie’s 1st Blog - Journalists Easy Life!!

Journalists? Easy life. Swanning off around the world, luxing it up on expenses, topping up on your tan.

Yes, as one of Navy News’ reporting team, I do get around a bit. The Gulf. The Gulf. The Gulf. Faslane. Plymouth. The Gulf again.  A chance not to ‘do the Gulf’ was, unsurprisingly, seized with both hands, not least because I’ve never done a Med deployment. So thank you to the good ship Somerset for the invite. In five days aboard the frigate I learned more about NATO deployments than I had in a decade of writing about them from behind a desk in Portsmouth.

We could, of course, produce a newspaper based entirely on submissions from our ships and units scattered across the globe. But it wouldn’t be as good.
