21 Oct 09 - What a Day for the Royal Navy !

29 people rate this

What a week for the Web Team !  Firstly an apology to everyone that was on line on Wed 21 Oct when the web site ground to a halt.  We knew it was going to be a heavy day on the website with all the events going on around the country - but we had underestimated just how heavy it was going to be!

Just in case you missed it - HMS ILLUSTRIOUS arrived in Liverpool for a 5 day high profile visit to celebrate Fly Navy 100; DEFENDER - the 5th of the T45 Destroyers - was launched in Barrow; it was Trafalgar Day so there was a service in St Pauls Cathedral and various dinners and parades took place throughout the country; and Princess Ann was visiting both HMS SULTAN and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard ! Phew !  All the events were a complete and resounding success - and to find out more take a peek at the stories published on the new pages (RN Live).

75 people rate this

Welcome to our first blog as the RN Web Team.  Our plan is for each of the team to take it in turn to update this blog, focussing on a different feature each week.

The RN web site has in excess of 4200 pages and covers a wide range of subjects including news from the front line, diaries and blogs, fact files and history, and recruiting to name but a few.    Each blog will focus on a  different part of the website and give you an insight into what we are working on and what you can expect to see on the site in the future.

Surprise Dining-out of the First Sea Lord

Friday 3 July - to Greenwich, for a surprise dining-out of the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, who hands over the reins to Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope on 21 July.  He knew he was invited to dinner, but it was meant to be a small affair at HMS PRESIDENT, by Tower Bridge.  On arrival there, though, he was ambushed, abducted, bundled into a University RN Unit ship and taken down the Thames to be greeted at the Old RN College by the Princess Royal, Hon Rear Admiral Sir Don Gosling, Admiral Band’s family, and about 300 Officers and Warrant Officers of the RN and RM in the Painted Hall.  It was a terrific event, and a cracking way to give Admiral Band a send-off after nearly 3.5 years in the biggest and undoubtedly most demanding job in the Navy.  That said, I think it’s probably about the 10th farewell dinner and at least the 4th surprise he’s enjoyed in the last few weeks…
