HMS Argyll (F231)

HMS Argyll is the longest-serving Type 23 Frigate in the Royal Navy.

Role

Led by Commander Charles J D Wheen. Since returning from a nine month Operational Deployment in May 19, HMS Argyll has operated in UK waters, conducted high level Defence Engagement activities, including support to the Bournemouth Air show, a visit to Antwerp to commemorate the liberation of the city in 1944 and attended DSEI 2019 where she demonstrated the ability to control Autonomous, unmanned Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) through the Ship’s Combat System – a world first.

Following a maintenance period, Operational Sea Training and a seven-month deployment to the Red Sea and Gulf in 2020, Argyll is back at sea around the UK on Maritime Security operations.

The First HMS Argyll

A 38-gun frigate began life as the Bonaventure. She was rebuilt frequently over nearly a century, and renamed Argyll just before the Jacobite Rising.

Passero 1718.
1748

End of service

After working hard during the War of Austrian Succession, she was towed to Harwich and sunk as a breakwater, bringing to an end 98 years of service.
1905

The Second HMS Argyll

It was 150 years before the name was resurrected in the form of a Devonshire-class armoured cruiser, which entered service in 1905.
1914

World War I

Argyll Number Two saw action quickly, capturing a German merchantman only two days into the war.
1915

Wrecked

In October 1915, she ran into Bell Rock near Dundee. None of her 650 crew were lost in the grounding, but the ship was scuttled by salvage experts.
1991

The current Argyll

Commissioned in 1991, she has deployed to Sierra Leone during their Civil War in 2000, the Gulf in 2005, as well as conducting counter-narcotics operations.
