539 Assault Squadron

539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines is a vital link in the Corps' chain, allowing 3 Commando Brigade to transfer onto land from the sea or river. It can operate amphibious Viking vehicles to deliver force into territories, something which the unit has done several times since it was created in the aftermath of the Falklands War.

Pictured is the VIP visit of the Albanian Preseident Bamir Topi, with Cdre Simon Ancona Deputy Commander UK Maritime Force, visiting Ex Albanian Lion, at Albania. The visit started with a tour on RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Mount Bay, followed by a demonstration of a beach landing consisting of Dutch Marines and the Albanian Army using Royal Marines landing craft for the beach assault. Military experience

Lieutenant Colonel Harris was commissioned into the Royal Marines in September 1991 and following training served as a Platoon Commander with the 3rd Royal Irish Regiment.

Following a series of unit appointments in 42 Commando he qualified as a Mountain Leader Officer in April 1997. As an MLO he has held both Unit and Staff appointments in 45 Commando and Brigade Patrol troop.

Lieutenant Colonel Harris attended the Advanced Command and Staff College in September 2006 and on completion became a unit Operations Officer prior to being selected for sub-unit command.

He was awarded an MBE in the September 2009 Operational Honours list.

In June 2010 he was promoted to his current rank and he assumed command of 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines / Armoured Support Group Royal Marines on 1 October 2012.

Lieutenant Colonel Harris has 2 children.

MISSION SUMMARY

Cougar is an amphibious task force exercising in the Mediterranean. The Response Force Task Group (RFTG) is the Royal Navy’s High Readiness Task Group. It has a number of units assigned to it including a helicopter carrier, an assault ship, two frigates, as well as a Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship and Commando units, and several Fleet Air Arm squadrons.

MISSION SUMMARY

Operation Olympics is the codename for the massive military effort to provide security and assistance to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Some 2,600 sailors, Royal Marines, Fleet Air Arm and RFA personnel are involved from flag raisers at medal ceremonies to venue security, floating command centres, eyes in the sky and helicopters and boats on patrol safeguarding venues.

The integrated LF (Landing Force) moved by LCU (Landing Craft Utility) of 6 ASRM (Assault Squadron Royal Marines) from HMS Albion to the beach, where the LF conducted a wader using Vikings to move troops into position before patrolling forward to secure the objective. Charlie Company, who are EMF (Embarked Military Force) onboard HMS Albion are part of RFTG (Response Force Task Group) 11. On completion of the attack there was a meal and prize giving ceremony to mark the end of the exercise. July 7, 2011.

  United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) Marines along with Royal Navy Marine Commandos conduct Exercise Sea Khanjar together. The exercise took place on U.A.E. Marines training areas. The aim of the Exercise is to consolidate amphibious operations together along with communications exercises olong with deck landing on HMS Albion. The U.A.E. Marines stayed on board HMS Albion throughout the exercise. HMS ALbion is currently on Operation Cougar and the Sea Khanjar exercise is apart of the operation. Vikings practice swimming drills along with loading and off loading from a Landing Craft Unit.

  The lead ships of the Response Force Task Group have arrived in the waters off the UKâs Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus to begin a series of pre-planned amphibious exercises designed to refresh this core skill and integrate all units in the Task Force.Led by the amphibious assault ship, HMS Albion, with her 8 landing craft, the Task Group includes the Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland and the landing ship dock RFA Cardigan Bay. The embarked force is from 40 Commando Royal Marines and includes a wide variety of vehicles as well as Sea King Mk4 and Lynx Mk9 helicopters from the Joint Helicopter Command.

Students will operate in a variety of about ten craft, ranging from small inflatable boats to large craft. Future landing craft handlers will be tested on their skills in river patrolling, tactical reconnaissance, navigation and casualty evacuation as well as craft-handling at speed.   Pictured is an amphibious assault demonstration, of Delta Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines and Saudi Arabian Marines for a VIP visit during Ex Red Alligator 2 at Saudi Arabia. Troops and vehicles are transported to the beach by landing craft from 539 ASRM (Assault Squadron Royal Marines) and a Saudi Puma helicopter. June 26, 2011.

  Pictured is the VIP visit of the Albanian Preseident Bamir Topi, with Cdre Simon Ancona Deputy Commander UK Maritime Force, visiting Ex Albanian Lion, at Albania. The visit started with a tour on RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Mount Bay, followed by a demonstration of a beach landing consisting of Dutch Marines and the Albanian Army using Royal Marines landing craft for the beach assault. There was also a press conference held at the end of the visit. May 30, 2011.
