HMS NORTHUMBERLAND had a recent port visit to Muscat, Oman on the 5-8th of December 2012. During this visit the Commanding Officer hosted an informal Lunch party for local dignitaries and the ships company played rugby against some of the local ex pats. The 3 day visit let the ships company do various excursions also. Muscat was also the last stop for mail before Christmas, the ship received some 180 bags of mail during this visit. The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope GCB OBE ADC, visited 40 Commando Royal Marines in HMS Price, Nahr-e-Saraj, Helmand, Afghanistan on the 21 November 2012. First Sea Lord has paid a flying visit to 40 Commando Royal Marines currently serving in Afghanistan. Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, was in Afghanistan to gauge the Royal Navy’s footprint in the country as well as to receive a first hand update on operations and the transition process. In the midst of his busy schedule he took time out to visit 40 Commando at Forward Operating Base Price, which Royal Marines have renamed HMS Price. While at HMS Price he took lunch with commandos of all ranks before receiving an update from Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Jackson RM. Admiral Stanhope said: “Albeit short, I was delighted to have visited 40 Commando at HMS Price where it was clear they were conducting tasks with zeal and working with a calm sense of purpose. Their assured professionalism was palpable and I left extremely confident of the team’s ability deliver their mission and overcome future challenges. “The contribution that the Royal Marines are making to the security of Helmand Province is essential to coalition plans and they have made an impressive start to their deployment. The Afghans could have no better mentors in imbuing the confidence they require to take responsibility for their own security.” HMS Price, and surrounding locations in central Helmand, are home to some 650 men and women of 40 Commando who began their tour of duty on Operation Herrick 17 in September. During the six-month deployment, the marines’ mission is to increasingly become a supporting unit for Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) as part of the ISAF drawdown in Afghanistan.

The first twenty seven Reconnaissance Troops for the Afghan National Army’s 3rd Kandak 215 Brigade have passed out of training at the Kandak’s base in Nahr-e Saraj. The occasion was marked with a parade at Camp Gereshk attended by troops for 3/215 Kandak and their ISAF mentors from 40 Commando Royal Marines on the 3 February 2013. Members of 40 Commando Royal Marines put together a 4 week long training package for the Afghan Warriors and covered a range of subjects from 'break contact drills' to map reading.
