        40 Commando

40 Commando is a battalion sized Unit providing part of 3 Commando Brigade’s amphibious warfare capability.

        40 Commando

Based near Taunton, Somerset, 40 Commando has been deployed in Afghanistan since September 2012, with some 650 personnel committed to the Nahr-e Sarah district of Helmand.

Previous deployments have been to the Sangin region of Helmand Province, as well as tasking with the amphibious Cougar deployments to the Mediterranean – showing that the commando is an elite and flexible unit able to deploy anywhere in the world.

This was followed by 18 months as Second in Command of Alpha Company. Further junior officer jobs included an appointment to HQ 3 Commando Brigade as the Adjutant Colonel to the Commander, a 6 month tour as a Divisional Liaison Officer in Bosnia, attendance at the Army Junior Command and Staff Course, and a stint at the Commando Training Centre for Royal Marines (CTCRM) as a Batch Officer.

He returned to 40 Commando Royal Marines in October 2002 to command Bravo Company on operations in Iraq twice (Operation Telic 1&4) and on exercise in Norway and the USA. Attendance at the Advanced Command and Staff College followed. For his ‘black bag’ job, he spent 2½ years as the Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Head Quarters in Northwood.

On promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, he was the Commander in Charge of Training at CTCRM for 6 months before moving to take charge of operations for Amphibious Forces. During this appointment he deployed on Operation Telic 12/13 as the Divisional Commander, Plans. He has just been the Royal Marines Corps Colonel in charge of Royal Marines recruiting.

Lieutenant Colonel Matt Jackson assumed command of 40 Commando Royal Marines on 18 January 2011.

Matt Jackson is 40 years old, married, and has 3 young daughters. He actively races at indoor rowing competitions and has great intentions of racing at some slalom water-skiing competitions sometime soon. Other hobbies include: telemarking, rugby, and the occasional game of rather amateur squash.
