Ambush

Ambush, second the Astute-class attack submarines, was named in Barrow on 16 December 2010 and launched on 5 January 2011.  Having now completed her initial dive, she is in the final stages of fitting out whilst preparing for an extensive programme of sea trials.  She will sail for her home port of Faslane in 2012.

Commander Peter Green was born in London in 1965 and joined BRNC Dartmouth as a Naval College Entrant in January 1984 as a Short Career Commission warfare officer.

Commander Green joined HMS Ambush as the first Commanding Officer in January 2009. During 2010, whilst standing by the build, he was seconded to the DES in the Submarine Production Project Team in the role of Astute Requirements Manager at the same time as retaining Command of HMS Ambush.

During initial sea training he served in HMS SWALLOW, a Hong Kong patrol vessel, and the Frigate HMS AURORA. Following Junior Warfare Officer courses, he volunteered for service in submarines and qualified as a submariner in the SSN HMS TRAFALGAR in 1987. Following the Submarine Warfare Course he served for 2 years as the Navigating Officer of the conventional submarine HMS OTTER. Short appointments to HM Submarines WARSPITE and SPLENDID preceded completion of the Submarine Advanced Warfare Course in 1992. Thereafter, he served as the Navigating and Operations Officer of the Polaris SSBN HMS RENOWN (Port) completing a prolonged refit, sea trials and two deterrent patrols.

From 1994 to 1996 Commander Green took a sabbatical from the submarine service and served as the Executive Officer of the Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS DUMBARTON CASTLE, initially based in the Falkland Islands and subsequently in the Fishery Protection Squadron in UK waters. Selected for the submarine Commanding Officers Qualifying Course, ‘Perisher’, in 1996 he qualified for submarine command in 1997 and became the Executive Officer of the Trident SSBN HMS VICTORIOUS (Stbd), completing three deterrent patrols.

In 1999 he was appointed to his first shore posting where he served in the Ministry of Defence within the Defence Intelligence Staff, in the Naval Collection Directorate. Subsequently appointed to CINCFLEET programming staff as the SSN short-term scheduler from April 2003, he was selected for promotion to Commander and sea command in May 2004. He commanded HMS TRAFALGAR 2005 to 2007. During his time in command the submarine conducted a variety of operations, including a deployment to the East coast of the United States, to undertake Tomahawk missile testing and a short deployment to the South Atlantic and South America. A posting in the Flag Officer Sea Training organisation as ST1 - Commander Sea Training from 2007-2009 followed. He graduated from Kingston University with a Masters Degree in Maritime Studies in 2006.
