Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering (RNSME) is located within the HMS Sultan site as part of the Tri-Service Defence College of Electromechanical Engineering (DCEME). The heart of the school, including the trainee divisional staff, course managers and the Captain and his staff, is located in Pillar Building. The RNSME comprises 3 departments.
RN School of Marine Engineering
The Craft Training Department Delivers training for basic and advanced engineering craft skills. The department has 2 main workshop areas to achieve this:
• The Machine and Fitting shop - Machine and fitting tools, including workshop technology classrooms.
• Allied trades workshops - Coppersmithing, woodwork, composite repairs sheet metal work and welding.
The Training, Management, Policy and Academics (TMPA) Department Undertakes training planning, accreditation, training equipment acquisition, IS support, training quality control, course design and academic training delivery. The Department achieves its business primarily through 4 Functional Groups:
• Academic Training Group (ATG) - Brunel Block.
• Training Technology (TTG) - Majestic Block.
• ME Training Group (METG) - Pillar Block.
• Training Resources (TR) - Parsons Block.
The Marine Engineering (ME) Department generates the delivery of all ME General Service and Nuclear Submarine career and specialist training. The Department achieves its output through 4 Functional Groups:
• Ship Systems Engineering Group (SEG) - Parsons Block.
• Ship Systems Engineering Group (Submarine) (SEG(SM)) - Rutherford Block.
• Ship Equipment Engineering Group - Watt Hangar, Raper & Morrell Blocks.
• Training Planning (TP) - Napier Block.
The RNSME delivers around 5,900 trained personnel a year - this is chiefly made up of RN courses although other Navies and civilian courses run as part of income generation packages with the RNs partner in industry, Flagship Training Limited.
