On Fri 25th Jan 2013, Captain Trevor Gulley - the Commandant of HMS SULTANâs Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) - accepted delivery of a Marine Trent 30 Gas Turbine from Rolls Royceâs MT30 Product Director, Mr Alan Millichamp. The engine, which was delivered to HMS SULTAN in Dec 2012, is known by RR as D2 and is one of the MT30 Development Engines. Manufactured by Rolls Royce for testing and product development purposes, D2 has been long term loaned to HMS SULTAN. With an impressive 36MW maximum continuous rating and featuring increased fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements compared with GTâs currently in RN service, the MT30 will power the future Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers. The engines are also strong contenders for powering the future T26 class frigates and are already in service with the US Navy in their Freedom Class Littoral Combat Ship and Zumwalt Class Destroyers. PO (PT) Daz Hoare watching his lads in a bout against Pompey University
On Friday 23 September 2011, HMS SULTAN boxing team competed on a civilian show for the first time in well over a decade. Four members of the boxing squad competed on the show held at Portsmouth University at an open air show which was well attended. Over the last 5 months HMS SULTAN boxing club has increased itâs numbers with 20 plus boxers attending every night of the week and early morning runs. The club is getting great feed back within the civilian boxing world as well as the military with the aim making the boxing gymnasium at HMS SULTAN one of the best in the Southern Counties. Although all four boxers lost their bouts, it was a fantastic effort from all four boxers who not only did themselves proud but also HMS SULTAN and the Royal Navy in the way they conducted themselves in and out of the ring.

HMS Sultan Splice the Mainbrace
HMS SULTAN SPLICES THE MAINBRACE Following the direction of Her Majesty The Queen to âsplice the mainbraceâ, the Royal Navy has celebrated their efforts during the Diamond Jubilee with a tot of rum. The order dates back to the days of sail when an extra ration of rum was issued for sailors who completed the difficult task of splicing the mainbrace. It was one of the most difficult emergency repair jobs on board during the heat of battle and as such, the sailors were rewarded by an extra ration of rum. Only Her Majesty the Queen, members of the Royal Family or the Admiralty Board can give the official order â on this occasion it was to thank the Senior Service for their contribution to the Jubilee celebrations Pictured:

Local boxing clubs benefit from HMS Sultan donation
*** Image digitally manipulated*** Cdre Slawson on right hand side has been added to image to create allusion of him presenting to himself as he is the CO of HMS SULTAN and Trustee of the RNRMC. Following the success of HMS SULTANâs annual boxing dinner show, a percentage of the profits are being donated to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and local boxing clubs. The SULTAN boxing show is an annual event held against SULTANâs local counterparts, HMS COLLINGWOOD. For the first time since 2006, HMS SULTAN celebrated winning the Trophy, with a 4-1 win on the night. The night consisted of boxers from HMS SULTAN, Portsmouth University and Brighton Amateur Boxing Club competing against each other. The money raised from the show saw the RNRMC receive £2,000, with a further £100 each donated to local Boxing clubs, Gosport Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) and Titchfield ABC. Commodore Mark Slawson ADC, Commanding Officer HMS SULTAN presented the cheques in Brunel Boxing Gym, HMS SULTAN on Thursday 21st June. Gosport ABC and Titchfield ABC had representatives present to collect their cheques, Brian Blair and Lou Stamp respectively. The aim of the event was to promote HMS SULTAN within the local boxing community, whilst donating a substantial sum to the RNRMC, and Gosport and Titchfield Amateur Boxing Clubs. At the beginning of the season the boxing squad received a very generous contribution from RNRMC and Sports Lottery, which helped purchase a new training ring and training equipment at HMS SULTAN. HMS SULTAN had a very successful season last year winning 3 championships. Throughout the season the squad had close connections to both Gosport and Titchfield Amateur Boxing Clubs. The money will go a long way in helping Titchfield complete building work on their gym, whilst new equipment can be purchased for Gosport ABCâs new gym.
