History

First Raleigh - 1778 - 1841:
A 32-gun American ship of 677 tons, captured on 28 September 1778. Registered in the Navy List she took part in the blockade of Charleston in 1870 and was sold in 1841.

Second Raleigh - 1806 - 1841:
A 16-gun ‘brig sloop’ of 382 tons. She saw service in the blockade of Rocheford in 1807 and the China Seas until 1835. The ship paid off at Sheerness in 1838 and was sold in 1841.

Third Raleigh - 1845 - 1857:
Built at Chatham , a 50-gun ship of 1,939 tons. She took part in the second China War in 1857 and foundered the same year when she struck an unchartered rock entering Macao.

Fourth Raleigh - 1873 -1905:
A 22-gun iron-built screw frigate of 4,720 tons, built at Chatham In 1878 she took part in the occupation of Cyprus and in 1894 in operations in the West Coast of Africa. She was sold in 1905.

Fifth Raleigh - 1919 - 1922:
Built on the Clyde a light cruiser of 9,750 tons and armed with 7.5 inch guns, the ship was wrecked in the Strait of Belle Isle on 8 August 1922.

Current Raleigh:
Key dates in the history of the current establishment are as follows:

• 1940 - HMS Raleigh is commissioned
• 1944 - Raleigh becomes a D-Day embarkation centre for US Navy Forces.
• 1959 - Raleigh becomes the new entry training establishment for all Ratings.
• 1971 to 1978 - The establishment is completely is re-modernised.
• 1981 - Womens Royal Navy Service basic training transfers from HMS Dauntless. 
• 1983 - The Royal Navy Supply School relocates from HMS Pembroke and basic training for Artificers transfers from HMS Fisgard. 
• 1990 - Basic training for males and females is integrated.
• 1991 - The Royal Navy School of Seamanship is opened.
• 1994 - The Royal Navy Cookery School relocates from Aldershot.
• 2000 - The Royal Navy Submarine School transfers from Gosport.
• 2001 - The Military Training School relocates from HMS Cambridge.
