The National Sea Cadet Training Centre is situated in the grounds of HMS Raleigh at Torpoint, providing sheltered inlets and open spaces on Dartmoor as an ideal environment for adventurous training as well as easy access to the RN establishments of Raleigh itself and Devonport Naval Base.
Sea Cadet Training Centre
Situated within the grounds of HMS Raleigh at Torpoint in Cornwall, the National Sea Cadet Training Centre is close to the rugged coastline of the south-west peninsula, with its sheltered inlets and coves, and also to the wide open spaces of Dartmoor, giving a wealth of adventurous training opportunities.
Cadets are accommodated in Vigilant Squadron, which is situated in the heart of the training area and sharing many of the Royal Navy facilities and instructors. Whilst at Vigilant Squadron, depending which course is taken, youngsters could be participating in ship visits, firefighting, various sports, first aid training, orienteering or sea survival.
Training is also carried out at other locations, including the Sea Cadet Training Centre HMS Excellent in Portsmouth – a full-time national training facility sponsored by MOD (N).
The centre has a full-time staff of five and provides training for both cadets and adult staff. The training complex consists of four well-furnished and equipped building, with five classrooms, a main office, training office, storerooms, cadet supervisors' office, student resource centre and kitchen facilities.
Both adult and cadet courses are accommodated in HMS Bristol, the Type 82 destroyer which is berthed alongside Whale Island. All meals are taken in respective messes in HMS Excellent.
