Yorkshire University Royal Navy Unit

HMS Explorer

Yorkshire Universities Royal Naval Unit

The Yorkshire URNU serves universities all over Yorkshire, including the universities of Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Bradford, and is open to all British and Commonwealth students. Our mission is to educate and inform students and the public alike about the role of the royal navy at home and abroad.

At our shore establishment in Leeds, and aboard our Hull based P2000 patrol ship, HMS Explorer, we teach basic nautical skills like navigation, seamanship, ship handling, and radio communications amongst many others. Drill nights take place in Leeds every Tuesday evening where students are taught a class based syllabus, focused on key skills for mariners, the history, role and values of the Royal Navy today, and the equipment used in a modern, sea-going armed force.

Adventurous Training

The URNU, however, is not all about study and work. The Armed forces offer unparalleled opportunities to participate in adventurous training, and the University Service Units are no exception. Members are encouraged to participate in the various activities from skiing and sailing excursions, to mountain leadership courses and flying camps where students are given the chance to learn to fly - there are dozens of activities to choose from and many at no extra cost to our members.

Sea Weekends

The frequent sea weekends are where members practice the skills that they have learned ashore. Sailing from Hull Marina, usually on a Saturday morning, our P2000 fast patrol ship often travels to Whitby, Scarborough and Newcastle, conducting exercises in seamanship and ship handling en route in a two day round trip, returning to Hull on Sunday evening. The students are supervised and instructed by five full time ship's company, who are all currently serving members of the Royal Navy, and provide a wealth of knowledge and many years of experience from which to learn.

Summer and Easter Deployments

The twice annual deployments are when the ship, along with a full complement of students and crew deploy for an extended period. Travelling as far as France, Germany, Denmark and Sweden HMS Explorer in company with other URNU ships from around the country, deploy for up to six weeks, divided into three, two week legs. These deployments give members a chance to immerse themselves in life on-board, and really get to grips with the running of both a ship, and just as importantly, a team, learning valuable lessons in leadership as well as seamanship, and complementing the classroom syllabus taught ashore.
