HMS Dasher is based at HM Naval Base Devonport, Plymouth, and regularly visits ports along the south west coast. Time at sea includes supporting the students of Bristol University Royal Naval Unit (URNU), as well as partaking in training and exercises run by the Royal Navy to aid other, larger RN vessels in maintaining their readiness.
Bristol University Royal Naval Unit
Our Community
Bristol URNU was formed in 1986, and recruits the majority of its 51 undergraduate students from Bristol University, Bath University and the University of the West of England. The unit meets once a week, on a Thursday evening, during term-time, and these drill nights include theoretical instruction, practical chartwork and an insight into Naval and military activities.
Sport and Adventurous Training plays an important role in developing teamwork and leadership within the unit, and weekly sports practice sessions are undertaken, which all members of the unit are encourage to attend. In addition each student will normally attend three sea-training weekends and a two-week deployment over the Easter or Summer holidays. Recruiting takes place at the start of each academic year in late September and early October.
