        HMS Biter

HMS Biter is a P2000 Class Coastal Training Craft. Her primary tasking is in support of Manchester and Salford Universities’ Royal Naval Unit, taking students to sea for weekends in the Irish Sea and for extended periods in UK and foreign waters. Other tasking includes supporting Royal Navy exercises and training, working with youth groups and cadets, and engagement with the local community.

        HMS Biter

Manchester & Salford Universities’ Royal Naval Unit (URNU) was formed in 1990 to provide training to students from Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford Universities, and to educate them about the Royal Navy. The syllabus is based primarily around navigation and seamanship both ashore and at sea, and also provides opportunities for travel, both around the UK and overseas, and for personal development and leadership training.

The unit meets formally every Tuesday at 1900 during term time. These drill nights include theoretical instruction, practical chartwork and an insight into Naval and military activities. Sport and Adventurous Training plays an important role in developing teamwork and leadership within the unit. In addition each student will normally attend three sea-training weekends and a two-week deployment over the Easter or Summer holidays. Recruiting takes place at the start of each academic year in early October.

Louis was born in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland in 1980 and educated at Grangefield School before studying Marine Biology at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, during which time he was a member of Northumbrian URNU. He joined the Royal Navy in January 2002 as a Warfare Officer (Submarines).

Fleet time was spent in the Type 22 Frigate HMS Campbeltown in support of Operation Veritas, the initial stages of the conflict in Afghanistan, the Type 42 Destroyer HMS Newcastle and HMS Leeds Castle, the Falkland Islands Patrol Vessel.

Eight months in the South Atlantic resulted in a number of visits to South America and Antarctica. On completion of Junior Warfare Officer’s Course in 2004 and Basic Submarine Training, Lieutenant Commander Gardner’s first complement appointment was to the Trafalgar Class SSN HMS Turbulent as Casing Officer.

Two busy years onboard saw support to multi-national exercises in the Arctic and Mediterranean, the submarine hosting the Submarine Command Course and the completion of numerous Operational Patrols.

Following successful completion of the Fleet Navigating Officers’ Course and the Submarine Intermediate Warfare Course in 2007, he returned to Turbulent as the Navigating Officer for two further Operational Patrols.

Attendance on the inaugural Principal Warfare Officer (Submarines) Course followed and in 2009 he joined HMS Trafalgar as Tactics and Sonar Officer for her final running period in support of the Submarine Command Course.

After a short period instructing the Preliminary Navigating Officers’ Course at HMS Collingwood, he joined the Vanguard Class SSBN HMS Vanguard as the Tactical Systems Officer where he completed two Nuclear Deterrent Patrols.

Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in October 2011, Louis assumed Command of HMS Biter and Manchester and Salford University Royal Naval Unit in March 2012.

He lives in Newquay, Cornwall and when not surfing, sailing or scuba diving, his time is split between his love of military and naval history and his beloved motorbike.

The second Biter was built by Wallis, Blackwall, and launched in July 1804. Unfortunately she was wrecked near Calais 16 months later.

        • The Third Biter

The third Biter saw action during the bombardment of Sveaborg in August 1855. She was a ‘Dapper’ class wood steam boat built by Pitcher, Northfleet, and saw 10 years service before being sold as a coal hulk.

        • The Fourth Biter

The fourth Biter was a 8200 ton Escort Carrier which saw active service in the Second World War. Built in Pennsylvania in December 1940, she was transferred to the RN in May 1942 on Lend-Lease. Carrying 15 aircraft, her first action was during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa.

        • Battles

In March 1943 she was seconded to the Fifth Escort Group in the North Atlantic and was instrumental in sinking U203 with her embarked swordfish aircraft. In August 1944 she suffered a major fire and played no further part in the war. In 1945 she was sold to the French Navy as Dixmude and served until 1966.

        • The Present Biter

The present HMS Biter is the fifth Ship to bear the name. For most of her life she has been the dedicated Ship of Manchester and Salford URNU. She was built by Watercraft in Shoreham, launched in 1985 and operated by the Royal Naval Reserve in Liverpool until she transferred to the URNU in 1990.
