Director of Music

On completion of two years musical training at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, Capt Ian Davis was posted to the Scotland band and was the principal clarinettist there for the next ten years.

As a newly promoted Corporal Ian Davis was a commander of a Green Goddess fire engine during Operation Fresco in 2002 and then was drafted onboard RFA Argus as a casualty handler during Operation Telic.

On leaving the Scotland band, Ian was appointed to the Royal Marines School of Music as the Solo Clarinet Instructor where he gained his Certificate of Teaching from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Ian was subsequently invited to attend the twelve-month Warrant Officer Bandmaster’s course where he gained the LRSM diploma in music direction (Wind Band) and AMusTCL diploma in Musical Theory, Criticism and Literature. He was also awarded the Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians for being the best overall student bandmaster that year. After a further period of study Ian gained a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours.

In January 2008 Ian successfully passed the Admiralty interview Board and was commissioned in January 2009. On completion of the Senior Corps Commission Officers’ Course he was promoted to Captain and temporarily appointed as Director of Music to the Royal Marines Band, Plymouth at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint. Following this appointment was another period of study, this time at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester studying conducting with Clark Rundell, Sir Mark Elder and Tim Reynish. On completion of his studies on the prestigious conducting course, Ian was appointed to the Scotland Band as the Director of Music.
