        RFA Fort Rosalie

        RFA Fort Rosalie

RFA Fort Rosalie is one of two Fort Class Auxiliary Fleet Support (AFSH) Vessels. She was completed in 1978 and is manned by RFA Officers, Ratings and MoD Civilians. The ship replenishes warships of the Royal Navy and allied navies with food, stores and ammunition, whilst underway. A flight deck and hangar complex enhances this global support role by enabling replenishment using helicopters and the embarkation of up to four Sea Kings for deployment as tactically required.

She carries the explosive and non-explosive stores to support a Royal Marines Landing Force from the sea and has the capacity to assist with disaster relief, i.e. hurricane support and evacuation of British nationals and entitled personnel.

The ship’s company the skills to enable them to respond to a range of emergencies: fire fighting, first aid, technical support and damage control/repair.

RFA Fort Rosalie underwent a life extending programme at Cammell Laird’s yard, Birkenhead in 2008 which upgraded many of the ship’s systems and the accommodation and was designed to extend the ship’s life for a further fifteen years.

During 2011 Fort Rosalie re-stored from refit and then completed Operational Sea Training, embarked 857 Naval Air Squadron, participated in a Joint Warrior Exercise, then deployed early on the Cougar deployment (still with 857 NAS) and was tasked to support Op Ellamy off Libya.

On completion of Op Ellamy she returned to the UK for a period of routine maintenance, reconfiguration of Operational cargo and departed just before Christmas to sail across the Atlantic to take up the role of Atlantic Patrol Tasking (North), providing the UK Government’s presence in the Caribbean, strengthening regional ties and in support of Counter Narcotics Ops.

In recognition of a most successful and busy year, Fort Rosalie has been awarded the 2011 Surface Flotilla Effectiveness Trophy, RFA Ship of the Year.

        RFA Fort Rosalie HISTORY

TRACK THE HISTORY OF SHIPS NAMED RFA Fort Rosalie
        • Passed to the British

Fort Rosalie was built by the French and passed to Britain under the 1763 Treaty of Paris, so the design of the ship’s Crest combines the red rose of England and the golden lily of France (its later Spanish and American history was not considered relevant). It also reflects the name, since the French for lily is lis or lys (as in fleur-de-lys), with the 's' being silent - Rose/Li.

        • World War II

The name FORT ROSALIE goes back to the Second World War and the building of the stores ship which was to become the first FORT ROSALIE, transferred to the RFA in 1947. Given that she was built in Montreal, the fact that she was named after a French fort in North America is probably not too surprising. The original name of the ship was FORT GRANGE (not only British, but the name of a fort sited at Gosport). Unfortunately, its similarity to FORT GEORGE caused problems with signals, and a decision was taken within the RFA to change it.
