Portsmouth Naval Base has been an integral part of the city since 1194. It is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface ships, including the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, new formidable Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates and mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons. It will be home to two new aircraft carriers – HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales – which are currently being built. At 65,000 tonnes they will be the biggest ships ever built for the Royal Navy. The base is a major employer with about 16,000 people working at peak times. It provides lodging facilities to RN personnel serving at the base and in Portsmouth-based ships.

Sonny Ward takes great delight in soaking AB Yates
(Pictured: Sonny Ward takes great delight in soaking AB Yates) A team of sailors from 1710 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), based in HM Naval Base Portsmouth, showed their support to local charity the Beneficial Foundation today (Aug 1) when they lent a hand at the charities fundraiser held at Portsmouth College. 1710 NAS has been affiliated to the Beneficial Foundation since they moved to Portsmouth Naval Base in 2010 and have been supporting the charity ever since. The sailors helped set up the event, ran a stall and willingly took part in the ââ¬Ësoak a sailorââ¬â¢ game to help raise much needed funds for the foundation. They have also worked on other projects including re-painting the front of the foundations building and renovating an overgrown and unusable allotment in the city. When they are not doing good deeds in the community, the team from 1710 NAS are part of the Ministry of Defence's centre of expertise for helicopter structural repair, service modifications and scientific support to military aviation. (Quote: (Jennie Brent, Chief Executive Beneficial Foundation) The Beneficial Foundation is a 33 year registered charity. We train support and help adults with special needs to gain skills, qualifications and build their self esteem which then enable them to join the world of work. The intention of our events is to raise the profile of the work we do in the community. The vast input from the Navy has been essential to the success of our Treasure Island theme this year. The proactive caring approach the team from 1710 Naval Air Squadron have given to us has been so very much appreciated

A Royal Navy diver by trade, Martin spent the first half of his six month tour of duty teaching the ANAâs first bomb disposal operator how to neutralise IEDs. He also cleared bombs for patrolling ISAF forces in Khar Nikah during a particularly busy spell of insurgent activity. Martin, 34, who lives in Southsea with wife Fiona and baby Indiana, 1, said: âI am glad to have been involved in the training and mentoring programme and really proud to have been picked for this award. âDuring the last operation I was involved in I bumped into the ANA operator we had been training earlier in the deployment and he told me he had cleared 130 IEDs without any incident since I last saw him and thanked me for the training. That was a really good feeling.â Image shows Leading Diver Martin Platt with his commendation award at Fleet Diving Bomb Disposal Unit, Horsea Island; Portsmouth. *** Local Caption *** Leading Diver Martin Platts

Staff at Portsmouth Naval Base turned out in force to bid farewell to their outgoing Commander – Commodore Rob Thompson – as he was driven out of the establishment for the last time.
Staff at Portsmouth Naval Base turned out in force to bid farewell to their outgoing Commander â Commodore Rob Thompson â as he was driven out of the establishment for the last time. Hundreds of service and civilian personnel lined the route as Cdre Thompson was chauffeured out in a six-tonne Army cargo vehicle from Marchwood military port at Southampton which also comes under his command. The band of the Royal Marines School of Music gave him a musical send-off, playing outside the Naval Base Headquarters as he departed the building for the final time. After three years in post, Cdre Thompson, 53, is moving to Edinburgh for a secondment to a civilian finance firm. Cdre Thompson said: âI am delighted to say that in my short period as custodian of the Naval base, the job has been as interesting, varied and indeed challenging as I had expected. The pace of change quickens and the Base will be busier then ever preparing for the arrival of the last two Type 45 destroyers and the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. âI have many fond memories of my time at the base and the support I have had from the military and civilian workforce has been tremendous.â His successor is 45 year-old Cdre Tony Radakin whose last job was commander of the maritime task force in Iraq. *** Local Caption *** Cdre Rob Thompson
