        Sandown Class

The seven Sandown-class minehunters are based in Scotland at Clyde Naval Base in MCM1 (Mine Counter Measures squadron 1). The staff and ships of MCM1 can be found deployed on minehunters in the Northern Arabian Gulf, or busy in NATO exercises with other nation's navies, or working around the British coastline, protecting our shores and clearing the old ordnance that remains as a legacy of previous wars.

        • HMS Bangor

Minehunter HMS Bangor is one of seven Sandown-class mine countermeasures ships based in Scotland. In 2011 she deployed off Libya as part of the NATO operation Unified Protector to protect Libyan civilians under threat of attack.

          HMS Bangor
        • HMS Blyth

The Minehunter HMS Blyth is one of seven Sandown-class mine countermeasures ships based in Scotland. We recently went through the rigours of Operational Sea Training, proving all of the ship’s equipment and capabilities whilst also being put through our paces, sharpening the crew’s skills in all of their roles and tasks.

        • HMS Grimsby

HMS Grimsby was built by Vosper Thornycroft at their Southampton yard and was launched by Lady Candice Blackham, on 10 August 1998. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 25 September 1999. HMS Grimsby is the second Royal Navy ship to bear the name and the first mine hunter to do so.

        • HMS Pembroke

Minehunter HMS Pembroke is one of seven Sandown-class minehunters based in Scotland.

The hull and large amounts of the superstructure are built from glass reinforced plastic (GRP), ensuring a strong non-magnetic ship, fit to survive the shocks associated with minehunting activities.

HMS Pembroke uses high-powered sonar to search underwater for mine-like contacts. Upon detection of a contact, classification runs are conducted on various frequencies. Once identified as a potential mine, the Seafox mine disposal system is able to visually identify the target as a mine and then destroy it.

HMS Pembroke also has her own mine clearance diving team which is used to identify potential mine threats beneath the surface.

        • HMS Penzance

HMS Penzance is a Sandown Class minehunter whose role is to neutralise underwater threats and clear the sea-lanes for shipping. HMS Penzance is one of seven Sandown-class minehunters based in Faslane, Scotland. At the moment we are in a maintenance period in Faslane having returned from a seven month NATO deployment last December. During the deployment we operated in the Baltic, Irish, and North Seas as well as the channel to clear the sea-lanes of old mines and bombs.

        • HMS Ramsey

HMS Ramsey is one of seven Sandown-class mine countermeasures ships based in Scotland.  Presently she is one of the four UK Mine Countermeasure Vessels (MCMVs) permanently deployed in the Gulf where she patrols sea lanes and operates against the threat of mines.

        • HMS Shoreham

HMS Shoreham was launched by Lady Perowne on 9 April 2001 and was formally accepted into service on 28 November 2001. She is the fifth vessel to carry the name. The crew are very proud of her three battle honours from World War 2, Sicily and the Mediterranean in 1943 and Burma in 1944-5. On this site you will be able to find out what we have been up to and where we have visited. We hope you enjoy your visit to HMS Shoreham and please surf back soon.
