Medical Director General (Naval) CV
Surgeon Vice Admiral Phillip Raffaelli joined the Navy in 1976 and after BRNC joined the submarine service. He attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in 1993 and was appointed Director of Health in 1999. Promoted Rear Admiral in 2004 he was appointed Surgeon General in 2009.
Medical Departments
The Medical departments consist of Medical Operational Capability, Medical Healthcare, Medical Assurance, Naval Nursing Services, Medical Support, and the Institute of Naval Medicine.
History of Naval Medicine
The Royal Navy has operated all over the world for centuries. Keeping sailors fit in all corners of the globe, where they are subject to diseases unknown in the UK, challenged the skills of naval medical staff and led to discoveries which have been at the forefront of modern medicine.

Pictures taken by LA(Phot) Joel Rouse on the 6th March 2013 during the CLR (Commando Logistics Regiment) CFSG (Command Forward Surgical Group) medical exercise. The exercise was conducted on the airfield of Royal Marine Barracks Chivenor, North Devon as part of a pre-deployment training package.CFSG is a collection of personnel from every arm of the Armed Forces and has around 78 personnel to operate the role 1 facility. A role 1 facility is a field hospital which consists of a resus department, theatre, lab and evacuation/intensive care ward. The purpose of the hospital is to provide life saving support to stabalise injured personnel and the aim is to get patients from entry to evacuation within 4 hours. From arrival at the location where the hospital is to be established, the CFSG can be capable of receiving it's first patient within one hour and fully established within 2 hours.

Distex Serial - OST 2011. Simulated disaster i.e. bomb explosion in order to prove deployability as an effective pool of manpower, properly managed throughout with very little intelligence or brief to go on. It involved the management of site access, casualties and deceased. Then, once the primary objectives had been achieved, i.e. preservation of life, the aim shifted to preservation of evidence, as the area turned into a crime scene.The realism of the exercise couldn't be any more real as this shot shows a first aider inserting a drip into the vein of a FOST (Flag Officer Sea Training) staff member...
