He joined the Royal Naval Reserve at HMS Eaglet in 1983 as a Weapons Engineering Officer. After transferring to HMS Sherwood a year later, Simon completed his junior officer training. He undertook sea training in the Fleet Minesweepers Waveney, Carron, Dovey and Spey, gaining his Sea Tender Weapon Engineering Charge Certificate in June 1992. Within the unit, Simon held the positions of Weapons Engineering Divisional Officer, Weapons Engineering Training Officer and Damage Control Officer.
