HMS Ferret

Bedford - HMS Ferret

The unit was formed in 1982 as an officer-only Naval Intelligence unit. We have expanded since then. We now train ratings in Operational Intelligence, and also accept former Communications Technicians. Additionally, we provide support to the National Defence Intelligence organisation.

Joining HMS Ferret With the possible exception of ex-service personnel, you will need to serve at least four years in the Royal Naval Reserve before considering a transfer to HMS Ferret. Selection weekends are usually held each Autumn.

If you’re successful, you’ll take an intensive course called the Fundamentals of Intelligence, which is run over seven weekends during the same year. Once you have completed your training, you will improve on your basic skills by taking part in naval exercises such as Joint Warrior.

When it comes to ex-regular service personnel, our concentration is on ratings, particularly Communications Technicians or Weapon Engineering Technicians.
