The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a MOD-sponsored cadet organisation. Its aim is to provide a disciplined organization within a school setting so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance.
CCF Royal Navy
The CCF is not a pre-Service organisation, although it acknowledges that one of its objectives is "to encourage those who have an interest in the services to join the regular Forces." The RN sponsors 143 CCF sections, of which 124 are purely Royal Navy, the other 19 are Royal Marines detachments, throughout the UK including Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. There are 11 Area Instructors who have approx 12 schools each to support.
Afloat training is the defining activity of the Naval Cadet Forces. The MOD gives significant support to the CCF by providing uniform, weapons and ammunition, training advice and assistance, loans of stores and equipment, and some remuneration to Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. The school provides the accommodation, the CFAV staff and some financial input to the section.
The RN proficiency syllabus bases its training emphasis on leadership, afloat activities and adventurous training.
Annual camps are held at Britannia Royal Naval College (Dartmouth), HMS Bristol (Portsmouth) and the Garelochead Training Area (Scotland). In addition to these camps there are over a hundred courses to choose from throughout the year, many leading to nationally-recognised qualification. These include sailing, power boating, pool lifeguarding, first aid, leadership and adventurous training, to name but a few of the options.
Cadets routinely take part in Channel sailing, national regattas and the Round the Isle of Wight Race, achieving notable results.
